Why Ricky?
Why did I create Ricky? Ricky long preceded the development of the story behind Flotsam. It was evident to me from my earliest experiences in diving that 1. there were a lot of really kick-ass women working in the industry, 2. they were too-often underestimated, marginalized, demeaned, and harassed, by customers and even their team members, and 3. most of the powerful characters in scuba-related novels were men.
As the years passed, I realized that a powerful character could be created as an amalgam of the dozens of really great dive women professionals I’d met over the years, and began to evolve Ricky. She’s incredibly competent, but a free-spirit and a bit of a rogue, unconventional when appropriate (and sometimes even when not appropriate) but I’d be happy to find out that she was my dive guide any time, anywhere. And maybe she’d invite me and my dive buddy for end-of-day libations.
